A Sound Salad with an Ambient Track

The first track here, the sound salad, I made through a combination of the electronic sounds that were provided. I started by making the buzzing sounds by inverting and adding reverb to the synth sound, as well as slowing it down to make it more of a backdrop to the rest of the track. I then took the screeching sound and repeated it until halfway through, where I began to reverse it. Then I put in my own sounds of scraping and tapping metal together and added more echo and reverb to multiply the sound, which happened to layer over itself nicely so I didn’t add anything more onto it from there.

And here’s the graphic score I drew up of it.

Next is my ambient track, which I had to make entirely in audacity as the soundhack application didn’t have a viable equivalent in Windows. Unfortunately, the provided plugins also didn’t work very well even after some troubleshooting, so I used a few others that worked with less troubleshooting. I took the route of starting with a sample of holding an “e” sound and then extended it by slowing it down. From there I inverted it and then raised the treble and lowered the base so that it would sound less like my voice. Although, I still wanted to add something else to it, so I managed to hook up my record player and isolate the sound of it skipping slightly, usually when a bit of dust builds up on the needle. All I did to the sound from there was lower the gain so that it was buried a little better but I still feel as though it comes out a bit too loud.
